Birth of Venus
A trashy novel with fabulous details of Florence. The story is cheap, but the history and layout of Florence are all there.

A brilliant novel about the people who built New York City's skyscrapers during the 1930s. A masterpiece, the great American novel.

City of Falling Angels
My favorite non-fiction about Italy. This work traces the recent fire of the Fenice opera house in Venice, and it gives a marvellous view of peculiarities of the city built on water. Available as an audio book, too.

Leonardo's Swans
This is a novel I picked up in the airport on my most recent trip to Italy. It's about two sisters, both powerful first ladies in Italy's history, who vie for the privilege of posing for Leonardo Da Vinci. There's a good dose of Italian history in the novel, and it's a quick airplane kind of read. I'm almost done with it.
